Visiting Wisconsin Wineries?
Intro to Wisconsin
Wisconsin wineries grow their own grapes? I know, I know, it’s hard to imagine. But hey, who said wine must be made from grapes? Berries and other fruit grow well here, so why not add some fruity accents to traditional wines… A Hungarian immigrant planted first Wisconsin vineyards mid 19th century. A hard working farmer he was, constant struggle with the cold climate eventually forced him to give up and move on to a warmer state, yes, California, of course. But others picked up on what was left over, and with experimentation, developed a few hardy varieties.
Supplementing Wisconsin grapes with those from surrounding states, they can survive even when the native crops fail. Of the locally grown grapes, hybrids dominate with varieties like Seyval, Leon Millot, Marechal Foch, and Vidal. There are also experimental vineyard trails connecting a few of the Wisconsin wineries occurring in the north of the state near Bayfield overlooking Lake Superior.
Wisconsin Wineries
You can find wineries in Wisconsin pretty much on every corner. It seems like they deny the fact that the state is simply not meant to be the wine king. To compensate for lack of popular grape varieties, they offer a unique selection of rare fruit wines – combinations of flavors hard to find anywhere else. I broke down the list of wineries by region so that it’s easier for you to plan your road trip.
