Vermont Wineries

Intro to Vermont Wineries

Vermont wineries and vineyards have to struggle with a cooler climate and shorter growing season than many grape varieties can tolerate. That's why, Vermont winemakers have focused on using cold-hardy French hybrid grapes like Leon Millot, Baco Noir, Seyval Blanc, Vidal and Cayuga, but have been experimenting with some vitis vinifera varieties like like Riesling and Zweigelt. Some Vermont vineyards produce wine made from grapes grown in other states, especially New York. Apples and other native fruits also add to the Vermont wine experience.

The first commercial winery in Vermont, Snow Farm Winery, opened in 1997. A handul more wineries have emerged since.
