Visiting South Carolina Wineries?

Intro and Quick Facts

A visit to South Carolina wineries is good to plan as a day trip during your holiday stay at the beaches. On its own, it’s probably going to be a disappointing event, since there are only about 10 wineries in the state, scattered hours away from each other.

Since you can buy liquor and wine in grocery stores, give it a try there first – it may save you a trip to winery that carries wines you don’t consider your favourites. Liquor stores draw attention of visitors by decorating the buildings with red dots since they are not allowed to advertise.

Late spring and summer are the best times to go, since you can take advantage of the beaches as well as beautiful parks SC has to offer.

Similar to Florida, South Carolina wineries try to honour their native grape variety – muscadine, although often supplemented with imported varieties. It’s been used in winemaking since 1600’s. You may even see some on the beaches, since this hardy vine doesn’t seem to care where to grow. Why not make wine from muscadine climbing up your house for example? Just kidding...

Another factor in the success of South Carolina wineries is it’s somewhat unpredictable weather. The grapes have to endure scorching dry winds at over 100 F in the summer. Some years, however, they get lots of rain, and remain damp for extended periods. Frequent hurricanes often damage the vineyards, leaving the owners frustrated.

Nevertheless, with added southern hospitality, you’re sure to enjoy the state grown wines, which include Muscadine, Chardonnay, Cayuga, Vidal Blanc, Chambourcin, Blanc du Bois, Cabernet Sauvignon, Catawba, Suwannee, De Chaunac.

If you decide to do some tasting in local restaurants, keep in mind that South Carolina is a "mini-bottle" state. Liquor there is served from pre-measured bottles. Make sure you try the wines with some southern food which is known for added spice.

Attractions

"Nothing could be finer than to be in South Carolina"

With beautiful beaches, historic heritage, low gas prices and plenty of golf courses, South Carolina welcomes repeat visitors year after year. One of the feature attractions is the sea food restaurant paradise at Murrell’s Inlet. Nearby, plenty of picturesque gardens will add excitement to your drive. As you make your way to the beaches, you will find white sands, biking and hiking trails, parks and campgrounds. Charleston would be one of the key points of interest, with it’s magnolia gardens and forts, and, of course, Myrtle Beach is an attraction on its own offering party time up north and family style entertainment further south.
