Scotchlock Winery Review


An Unexpected Surprise

Recently, I and my husband went to a fruit and berry farm to pick some fresh summer berries. Surprisingly, the farm also had an associated fruit winery. First, skeptical to try something that is made of the same fruit I just picked, I decided to give the wines a try. Maybe it was the fact that they claimed to be award winning, or that they had a higher alcohol content. The winery was also set-up in a very attractive manner, displaying their awards and trophies.

I was presented with a choice of a handful of wines made out of various types of current: white, red and black. The white current one was way too dry for my pallet, and I didn’t even finish the tiny shot glass it was served in. The red current was a bit more pleasant, but still way too sour, with bitter undertones. I can see how it could compliment a strong flavored dish, but I had nothing but a cracker to take with it, so I kept going. The next one was black current. Man oh man, was it ever delicious! I called my husband over and made him try all 3. He also picked the black current wine to be the best, and agreed that we take a bottle home.

A Few Weeks After

I let it sit for a few weeks. The bottle is a smaller one – the one that late harvest wines are usually sold in. I finally decided to open it one day and give it a try at home. I enjoyed every sip of this full-bodied wine. With every next sip I took, I kept wondering more and more how it is even possible to make such a great wine out of such an unpopular berry. It was smoky, rich, sweet yet dry, very aromatic… the taste kept lingering on my tongue for a minute or two after I swallowed it. In conclusion, I cannot wait to go back and grab a case!
