Visiting New York Wineries?
Intro and Quick Facts
New York wineries are famous for being the oldest ones around, and the ones producing a large variety of grapes.
New York State enjoys pleasantly warm summers? Daytime temperatures usually range from the upper 70s to mid 80s (20 to 25 C), making the climate favorable to graceful ripening of the grapes. Cold temperatures and abundant snowfall in the winter is enjoyed by the state's ice wine producers.
First New York Wineries were founded in 1600's by Dutch and French settlers. Although European grape varieties did not survive in the rougher climate, eventually it was discovered that they could be grafted onto native rootstock. This made it possible for the New York wine industry to mirror the diversity found in the City that occupies Manhattan Island today.
With over 200 NY wineries, the state ranks first in wine production - the other top wine states are California, Washington, Oregon and Texas respectively.
Some of the most notable wine areas of the state include the Hudson River Valley, Long Island, and the Lake Erie and Finger Lakes wine regions.
