Louisiana Wineries

Brief Overview

The history of Louisiana wineries can be traced to early 19 hundreds when European wines started to get imported into the state, and native businessmen attempted to grow the grapes locally. However, the loamy soils, heat and humidity were unsuitable for the vinifera vines causing decease and mildew. By 1980’s, wine growers found that Norton and Blanc du Bois varietals have a better chance of surviving. Mixing most wines with fruit, Louisiana wineries are now starting to get recognized nationwide.

There are six wineries in Louisiana collectively producing about 20,000 gallons per year. Five of those wineries are members of the Louisiana Wineries Association: Casa De Sue Winery, Louisiana’s first licensed winery located in Clinton which produces eleven different wines from muscadines to blueberries; Amato’s Winery in Independence, which produces the much-sought after strawberry wine as well as a variety of other fruit wines; Feliciana Cellars in Jackson, the state’s largest winery which also produces a number of fine muscadine and various fruit wines but is also making wine from the Niagara grape. Landry Vineyards in Covington, the newest winery, produces a fine wine from the hybrid grape, Blanc Du Bois.

Things to do in Louisiana

Louisiana has one of the most fascinating cultures of any state in the nation. In what other state could you visit the battleground where a ragtag group of soldiers repelled a British invasion with the help of a notorious outlaw pirate?

Visitors can learn about many of the most interesting parts of general American history right here in Louisiana. From the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, to the Sci-Port Discovery Center in Shreveport, and the countless museums, zoos, and cultural and historical sites statewide, there is a lifetime of learning to do in Louisiana.

New Orleans is one of Louisiana's biggest tourist attractions with Basin Street jazz clubs, the charm of the French Quarter, and the annual Mardi Gras celebration. Other major tourist attractions include historic plantations near Natchitoches, the Old State Capitol at Baton Rouge and a network of very popular state parks.
