Visiting Idaho Wineries?
Intro to Idaho
You would probably agree that Idaho wineries is not what the state is best known for. Idaho is famous for its potato production rather than winemaking. Well, although Idaho's vineyards are not as established as New York's or Washington's, the crops from the grapes planted in 1970's are now mature and full of flavor. Although the vine stock is relatively young, the winemaking industry goes back to 1870's, but was later almost completed wiped out by Prohibition.
Today, on just over 2000 acres occupied by 18 modest wineries, despite cold winters and cool summer nights, a few popular varieties flourish. They include Riesling, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. One of the factors that allows Idaho wineries to produce more and more competitive wines, is the state's elevation of almost 3000 feet as well as volcanic ash fertilized soil.
