Visiting Connecticut Wineries?
Intro and Quick Facts
Connecticut wineries are spread all over the state. You can find at least one winery within 45 minutes from where you decide to stay. Let me give you some state facts before I get into the winery info.
Connecticut was covered by a glacier 11,000 years ago. After this glacier retreated, it left behind many lakes and pools that total 146 square miles. A great forest grew after the retreat of the glacier and is now abundant with wildlife.
Connecticut’s climate is one of the best ones in new England for growing grapes. July highs reach 70s while January temperatures are around 20s. Heat spikes and winter freezes are not uncommon. Rain and snow combined account for about 48” of precipitation annually.
Connecticut can be divided into four parts: the eastern hill country, the Connecticut River Valley, the western hill country, and the southern coast.
Windsor, the first English colony in Connecticut, was established in 1633. It was intended to be a trading outpost.
The Connecticut coast is sometimes referred to as the Gold Coast of Connecticut because of its many seaports and its attractive beaches.
The first of Connecticut wineries was established in 1978, seems like yesterday. Many followed shortly after. In 1988, the state approved it’s official wine trail, which is split in two: eastern and western trail. It makes sense to take 2 separate occasions to explore each of the trails, but you can fit it all in a two-day weekend if you make it a goal. There are 19 wineries to visit, most of which offer free tasting.
Connecticut wineries produce a wide variety of wines ranging from dry, barrel fermented Chardonnays, Cabernet Francs, Dry Rieslings and Seyval Blanc. To fruitier sweeter whites and reds and late harvest Vidals and Vignoles. Some wineries produce sparkling wines, ciders and wines made from pears and apples.
Overview of Connecticut Wineries
The state’s wineries make wine from their own crops of grapes, fruit and berries. There are many award winning varieties, so make sure you try some other kinds besides your standard choice.
Autumn is the perfect time to spend a day or a weekend following the Connecticut Wine Trail for a sampling of some of New England's most delectable wines and an added bonus - glimpses of some of the most beautiful countryside in the Northeast.
